Everything that irritates us about others,
can lead us to an understanding of ourselves.

We should take our emotional energy account even more seriously than our bank account. Imagine if we did that, both as individuals and in larger contexts. If, at department meetings, we focused on whether what we’re talking about is worth spending energy on. Is it a good use of time, or is it a waste of energy if we can’t do anything about it anyway? Perhaps we would become better at preventing mental distress if we took our emotional economy more seriously.

When you're aware of your colleagues' personality type profiles, it becomes easier to understand their perspectives, adjust your communication, and avoid misunderstandings. Listen below to Rikke Østergaard’s descriptions of the four Joe types, based on Jung’s four archetypes, which define our personality traits and how we work together.

Rikke Østergaard has worked with job satisfaction for over 20 years. BEFRI PREBEN is her new book. – and a new concept designed to help you and your team create a common reference framework for when we are high or low on emotional energy – and what that means for our collaboration at work.

Rikke’s previous book We had a party at work, but then Preben showed up. (2021) shows how and why emotions spread in multiple ways, this book goes a step further and focuses on how we can minimize the spread and free our own and each other's inner Joe from the negative contagion that too often takes over and controls our day.

I Free Joe you are introduced to several Joe types, as much of the liberation lies in understanding that everyone is different, that we work differently, and contribute to the community in various ways. You will also gain insight into how you can manage your own emotional economy – which is the term I use for our daily energy balance and emotional surplus – and get a better energy account. It simply requires that you start taking your emotions as seriously as the transactions in your online banking.

The book is based on Rikke Østergaard’s experiences from 20 years of field studies and research, and she sees it as her primary task to be your communicator. A communicator who puts the theory into a context you can recognize from your everyday life. This means you won't encounter a lot of theory, but rather a series of examples drawn from your daily life and mine.

Above all, we hope that after reading the book, you will be left with the belief that your life – including your work life – can be good. Because it can!
